In this study, in order to investigate the effect of enclosing stone columns on settlement behavior and bearing capacity, two-dimensional and three-dimensional numerical modeling was performed using PLAXIS software. In the two-dimensional model, the behavior of a single column in confined and unconfined conditions was analyzed, and in the three-dimensional model, the group performance of columns under a loading plate was examined. In both cases, the geometric parameters of the columns were considered, including diameters of 0.6, 0.8, 1, and 1.2 meters and heights of 3, 4, 5, and 6 meters. Also, geotextiles were used in three vertical, horizontal, and combined vertical-horizontal positions with different sizes to enclose the stone columns. The modeling results were evaluated based on indicators such as total settlement, initial stiffness, bearing capacity, and settlement reduction ratio. The analysis results showed that enclosing columns with geotextiles significantly reduced settlement and increased soil bearing capacity. In 2D models, settlement reduction ratio (SSR) was obtained in the range of 30 to 50 percent and bearing improvement factor (BIF) was about 35 to 60 percent. The initial stiffness of the confined columns (K-init) was calculated to be about twice that of the unconfined case. In 3D models, settlement reduction was between 40 to 50 percent and bearing capacity improvement was about 55 percent. Also, comparison of group arrangements showed that triangular arrangement performed better than square arrangement due to better soil coverage.
