Abstract

Piano key weirs are growth type weirs that are designed to improve the capacity of dams. In this research, due to the laboratory nature of most of the studies conducted on scouring downstream of piano key overflows, the numerical study of scouring downstream of piano key weirs has been done using Flow-3D weirs. In this research, the simulation of scouring of the downstream bed of two types of trapezoidal and triangular piano key weirs was carried out in the same geometric and hydraulic conditions. The laboratory study of Ghodsian et al., 2021, was used to calibrate the software in sediment transfer conditions. A number of 18 numerical simulations were carried out for scouring downstream of two types of trapezoidal and triangular piano key weirs under the conditions of changes in flow rate and depth. The local scouring changes in the trapezoidal piano key spillway were observed at the depths of 0.05, 0.075 and 0.1 meters and all three flow rates were 25, 35 and 45 liters/second less than the triangular piano key weirs. With the increase of 2 times the depth of the weirs in the trapezoidal spillway up to 29% and in the triangular weirs up to 26.6%, the scour depth is reduced. Also, with a 44% decrease in discharge at a constant depth of footing, a 40% and 37.4% decrease in the maximum scour hole depth was observed in the trapezoidal and triangular overflow, respectively.
